A gentle beginning to a new way of listening.

Our first 'Tea and Talk' gathering was more than a meeting, it was a moment. A moment where people came together, sat side by side, and spoke with honesty, courage, and hope. As the Independent Chair I am committed to creating spaces just like this: spaces where people feel safe to share, valued in their truth, and welcomed exactly as they are.

'Tea and Talk' was designed with simplicity and kindness at its heart. A chance to breathe, reflect, and be heard. What unfolded was a reminder that when we slow down and truly listen, insight rises naturally.

A new way of working, shaped by community

This gathering marked the beginning of a new approach for the Panel. One that moves away from formal, distant consultation and towards something more human:

• Listening with compassion

• Creating culturally aware, psychologically safe spaces

• Valuing lived experience as expertise

• Building trust through presence, not pressure

People shared stories that were thoughtful, brave, and deeply personal. They spoke about belonging, representation, and the desire for relationships built on transparency and respect. Every voice added something meaningful.

What we learned together

Across the conversation, gentle but important themes emerged:

• Communities want to be partners, not observers

• Trust grows when people feel seen and understood

• Cultural insight must be woven into everyday practice

• Change begins with honest dialogue, not assumptions

These reflections will guide how we move forward adjusting so that institutions co-produce with communities.

Why this matters

'Tea and Talk' is not just an event series. It is a commitment to kindness, curiosity, and shared responsibility. It signals a shift in where the conversation leads and how we build equity.

As Independent Chair, my role is to encourage diversity of thought while holding a space to ensure that every conversation is met with dignity, every insight is honoured, and every person feels that their voice has a place in shaping our future.

Looking ahead with hope

This was only the beginning. 'Tea and Talk' will continue to grow, reaching more communities and inviting more voices into the conversation. Each gathering will help us build.
