I recently took part in a virtual lunchtime conversation focused on equity, co‑production, and the future of research, policy, and practice. As one of three invited speakers, I had the opportunity to share insights from my professional journey and reflect on the realities of leading meaningful change within complex public systems.

Drawing on my experience as the Independent Chair of the Suffolk Police Race Action Plan, I explored what it takes to embed equity at the heart of organisational culture and decision‑making. This includes the courage to confront uncomfortable truths, the discipline of accountability, and the importance of listening deeply to the communities most affected by institutional practices. The session provided a valuable space to discuss the challenges and breakthroughs that shape this work, and to highlight the importance of sustained, transparent engagement in rebuilding trust.

The conversation was strengthened by the ongoing research undertaken by the University of Suffolk and the dedicated team within the Institute for Social Justice and Crime. Their work continues to shed light on issues of race, policing, community experience, and social justice — offering evidence that supports more informed, inclusive, and responsive approaches across the sector. Their contribution underscores the vital role that research plays in shaping policy and practice that truly reflects the needs and realities of diverse communities.

What made the event particularly impactful was the level of engagement from participants. Their reflections, questions, and shared experiences created a dynamic and thoughtful dialogue, demonstrating the collective commitment to advancing equity and co‑production across disciplines. It was a reminder that meaningful system change is not achieved in isolation, but through collaboration, shared learning, and a willingness to rethink established ways of working.
